Why are dominican actor/actresses given african american roles?

Rosario Dawson for example is dominican but her features aren't so black to only play black women. Im am also dominican and we are of mixed race spanish and black, Im not saying she should play michael jackson look alike, but she can play a latina role.

  1. rosario dawson is cuban
  2. maybe because of their skin color. and maybe one day that actress will play a latina role, but for now she took what she could get!
  3. Because most of them look African-American.
  4. ...because she's part Black. That's the benefit of being Black, you can play a Jamaican (Taye Diggs), an African (Jill Scott), or an African American (Idris Elba). The actors that I mentioned played different Black ethnicities than what they are, I doubt they're complaining as long as the money is coming. Do you think Eddie Murphy cared about playing Akeem in coming to America? *It's not that serious!!!
  5. Alfonso Ribeiro (part of his descendants is dominican but also from trinidad and tobago)
  6. Yeah, but their skin is dark, so people think of them as black. When I see girls like zoe saldana or whatever, I think they are black.
  7. wtf...Same reason Cameron Diaz is given white roles..Or a German person is given a British role.. Black latinos arent socialized to be latino in the U.S., their socialized to be black.."Hispanics" or "latinos" are the amerindian looking people according to everyone on y/a and in society..
  8. who gives a fuck
  9. Abre los ojos y date cuenta de la realidad chica. A lot of people don't like to admit it, "latino" or "hispanic" is a culture, not a race. Hispanic is a term used to describe the culture and people of countries formerly ruled by Spain. Dominican's are not just one race it's just a nationality with many different races as well as mixed races, this being said, the African heritage is very strongly present in the Dominican Republic. Whether you like it or not, it is what it is, so embrace it and stop complaining about it because people are just laughing at how pathetic your plight is. A "latina" can look like Rigoberta MenchĂș, Celia Cruz, Cristina Saralegui, Mercedes Sosa, Eva Longoria,. A latina can be aboriginal looking, african looking(black) afro-antillana, afro-latina, white, mestiza(half white, half aboriginal), mulata(o) half black, half white, or a mix of all of the above. In latin american countries, all of these races are present in different percentages depending on the countries. Some have more aboriginal looking people, others more european, others more african looking people and in many countries it also depends on where they are situated geographically, in rural areas, along the coast or in the capital. You know what I'm talking about. In Moca, San Pedro de Marcoris or Santo Domingo, or Villa Altagracia, the population is different in all of them. A few years ago, there was talk about a movie being filmed about our departed Celia Cruz. Some people were all up in arms because it was speculated that Whoopi Goldberg might play the role of "La reina de la Salsa". Now, why was that? Whoopi is the exact same color as Celia Cruz. What did people expect? If Eva Mendes were to play her role that would be ok I suppose. To make her look lighter skin would be more accepted than having her look darker? Food for thought...
